What does the name Pink Finss mean?

One of the most common questions we get asked is “Where did the name Pink Finss come from?” So we thought we would explain the name and the meaning behind it.

When Pink Finss founder Jodie Amor was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago she embarked on an unknown journey of treatment which included a double mastectomy, reconstruction, 9 months of chemotherapy and follow on medication.  Whilst having chemotherapy treatment Jodie noticed a sign promoting Tri Pink which is a National triathlon event raising money for breast cancer research.  Jodie decided to set herself a goal to compete in the event so that she had something to focus on and to keep her motivated to do some exercise which is proven to help mentally and physically when undergoing treatment.

Living on property Jodie started running around the paddocks each day, and it wasn’t until she connected with local swim school “Finss” in Ebenezer that she started to get better prepared for what lay ahead.  This became the base for Jodie to practice all the running, swimming and riding that was required and it wasn’t long before she had encouraged others to join in and they would all meet at Finss and train together.

After a few years of competing in the Triathlon Pink event individually they decided to enter as a group which required a name, and Pink Finss was born.  “That year, there was a group of over 75 people from the Hawkesbury participating and we raised over $20,000 for breast cancer research so I just thought to myself – why not create our own charity and direct the money raised back into the Hawkesbury community helping local ladies who had been diagnosed with breast cancer”, said Jodie.

Almost 12 years later the Pink Finss has raised over $2.5 million dollars and it’s so great to know that the money has stayed local.  It started with one idea, now when we think of the Pink Finss the name reminds us not only of Jodie's own journey with breast cancer, but of the commitment and determination many people displayed when competing in those triathlon events many years ago. People conquering their own fears and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to show themselves that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.  The name also reminds us of the community connection that formed the foundation for the Pink Finss Charity and that foundation remains just as strong today.
